Intro lesson
Keep Working Through a Network Outage
Map what must stay powered, decide which tasks need backup internet and make recovery something you can test.

Three protections for three different problems
Battery power / UPS
Keeps selected equipment running for a limited time. Runtime depends on the actual UPS, battery condition and connected load.
Backup internet
Provides another outside path when the main connection fails. It still depends on local equipment, power and a usable backup service.
Configuration and data backups
Help rebuild or restore a system. They do not automatically keep the current connection running.
The router survives. The modem does not.
Worked example
A battery-backed router during a power cut
The router remains on, but the provider terminal and PoE switch lose power. The router’s battery backup alone cannot keep users online.
Trace the whole task: user device → AP or wired connection → switch → gateway → provider equipment → outside service. Identify what must remain powered and what can fail together.
Write a one-page continuity plan
| Decision | Example question |
|---|---|
| Priority | Must checkout and phone calls work, or can the office wait? |
| Runtime | How long must the selected load run? Check both UPS power limits and the manufacturer’s runtime data at that load. |
| Alternative path | Does the backup service have usable capacity, coverage and data allowance? |
| Application behavior | Will VPNs, source-address restrictions and active sessions recover when the outside address changes? |
| Recovery | Who restores service, where are the backups and how is the result verified? |
Automatic failover may interrupt existing sessions. Two subscriptions can still share an upstream route or power dependency. Confirm the failure you are actually protecting against.
Plan a controlled recovery check
On paper first, list the task, expected interruption, expected recovery time, observers and rollback. A qualified administrator can then schedule a controlled test with the business owner’s authorization.
What should the record include?
Start and end times, the simulated failure, what stayed available, what did not, actual application recovery and open actions. A backup file becomes useful evidence only after a suitable restore test.

Read the answers and explanations
- No; check every required power dependency.
The modem, switch, APs and user devices can also need power.
- Behavior depends on the design and application; test recovery.
Address changes, tunnels and application sessions can affect recovery.
- A controlled test showing actual task recovery and remaining limits.
A recovery claim needs a tested outcome for the required task.
