Business move checklist

Move the business with the connections ready.

A space can be ready for desks before it is ready for the network. Assign an owner and a target date to these dependencies before confirming the move.

Before you set the cutover date

  • Internet: confirm the provider order, installation date and actual handoff location.
  • Extension: identify who connects the provider handoff to your equipment room.
  • Endpoints: count work areas, access points, phones, printers and other connected equipment.
  • Space: confirm rack location, cable routes, power and cooling responsibilities.
  • Testing: specify any formal cabling acceptance requirements before installation is quoted.

Ask for a way to verify the new internet service before users move. A scheduled provider appointment is not evidence that the connection is ready.

Prepare the equipment and technical plan

  • Inventory the equipment and label what goes to each location.
  • Confirm gateway, switch, Wi-Fi and application owners.
  • Save the relevant configuration backups.
  • Review public addressing, remote access and phone-service dependencies.
  • Agree on secure access for authorized administrators.

Identify the onsite lead, remote technical contact and person who can approve changes. Establish a go/no-go time and a rollback option appropriate to the systems being moved.

On move day and at handoff

  1. Confirm readiness: verify access, service, materials and the approved interruption window.
  2. Move in stages: follow the planned connection and configuration sequence.
  3. Test real work: check internet, critical applications, printing, phones, remote access and representative wireless devices.
  4. Close the record: collect cable IDs, equipment details and agreed test results; assign any open items.

Keep the ongoing support contact clear. A successful move should leave the business with both working systems and the information needed to maintain them.
