Cat6 performance depends on maintaining pair twist, conductor geometry, strain relief, and connector compatibility. A termination that passes continuity may still fail performance testing.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Confirm connector compatibility, wiring scheme, and cable construction.
  2. Strip only the required jacket length without nicking insulation.
  3. Maintain pair twist to the termination point and route conductors without sharp bends.
  4. Seat conductors fully using the specified tool and trim method.
  5. Secure strain relief on the jacket, not individual conductors.
  6. Inspect both sides, label, wiremap, and certify when required.

How to verify the result

  • Correct wiremap with no split pairs
  • Jacket is captured by strain relief
  • Untwist and exposed conductor remain within manufacturer limits

Common mistakes

  • Overstripping the jacket
  • Flattening or combing pairs for appearance
  • Using pass-through plugs not approved for the cable
Troubleshooting and escalation

Return to the last known-good state. Separate physical, addressing, configuration, application, and documentation issues. Capture evidence before resetting or replacing equipment. Escalate when safety, life-safety service, regulated systems, unsupported hardware, or an unknown production dependency is involved.
