Concept explanation
Wi-Fi design balances signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, capacity, channel reuse, client behavior, and wired backhaul. Strong signal alone does not prove a good design.
Step-by-step procedure
- Mark high-use areas, client counts, applications, and roaming paths.
- Identify attenuation from concrete, metal, glass, shelving, equipment, and elevation.
- Place access points according to antenna pattern and intended mounting orientation.
- Plan channels, channel widths, and transmit power as a coordinated system.
- Provide wired backhaul wherever practical.
- Validate with representative clients and adjust from measured results.
How to verify the result
- Target areas meet signal and SNR goals
- Channel use and retries remain acceptable under load
- Roaming and application tests succeed with real clients
Common mistakes
- Placing access points in closets for appearance
- Using maximum transmit power everywhere
- Adding mesh hops instead of addressing cabling and placement
Troubleshooting and escalation
Return to the last known-good state. Separate physical, addressing, configuration, application, and documentation issues. Capture evidence before resetting or replacing equipment. Escalate when safety, life-safety service, regulated systems, unsupported hardware, or an unknown production dependency is involved.
